Darts

Steve and I were having a "discussion" on whether darts and snooker are sports or not. he reckons they are. I think any activity where you can smoke a cigarette or drink alcohol whilst you're doing it is not a sport. So snooker and darts no - ice skating and driving - yes.

BTW I've registered a domain name, its Ginarobbo.com I didn't want to mention it on my blog (because it is boring) but I've been told I should do so.

Ruthie - thanks for your lovely comments - but can't you post them to my blog - all those 0 comments are a bit depressing. Mark - I've no clue (and more importantly the Robertson inhouse computer expert has no clue) why you are no longer able to post comments.

I've had this discussion lots of times and am firmly with Steve on this! I think a sport is something competitive which also has spectators, which is why, for example, darts is different from scrabble. So there.

  2. So you think chess is a sport then?

Posting fine now. don't know what it was but it's gone now.

Gina I'm with you, anytime you can smoke and drink while doing that thing, it's not a sport. It may be a game of skill but it's clearly not a sport. If spectators were the only crit then girl/guy watching would be a sport as well.

BTW, congrats on owning a little piece of the web.

Gina, I'm with you on this one too! A bar-brawl can be quite competitive, and there's always a spectator or two egging them on!

Fits the criteria, but don't see it as a "sport"... sorry alan and steve!

  5. Surely snooker is a sport.
Would you say one of England's greatest sportsmen is not Essex boy Steve Davis - winner of the Sports Personality of the Year award in 1988?
Darts may not command the higher prizes, but is getting there.
The nugget used to practice 8 hours a day, in a very competitive sport. The audiences ran into over ten million for the finals, only beaten by the FA Cup final in the 80s.
    Surely you'll agree?

  6. No, Steve I don't agree. Are you saying if you had to practise and a lot of people watch it - it is a sport? is singing a sport then?
Trust the Essex boys to think pub games are a sport ;0)

Well Gina, the ball's in your court (can't be bothered to avoid the puns) - what, for you, IS the definition of a sport?!

  8. I would define sport as a competitive activity that you can't drink nor smoke whilst you are doing it.

That's why I would classify archery as a sport but not darts.
I think we need to agree to differ!

But who says you can't drink or smoke whilst doing archery!!!

Differ we do - but what a great talking point! What's the next one going to be?

We must jump into the debate. Alex played darts for many years and competed at a high level, but he wouldn't suggest that it involves the same level of training and fitness that something like athletics would. It is a game of precision that requires skill and dedication, but not a sport in our opinion.
